Winter Self-Storage: Delicate Items & Antiques

California winters are notoriously mild, but that doesn’t mean it’s summer all the time. If you are placing delicate items into self-storage in Arroyo Grande, CA, there are still precautions you should take to keep them in prime condition.

Here are a few tips from Central Coast self-storage.

Books

Books may seem hardy, but they can actually be quite fragile. Make sure books are clean and dust-free before storing them. Individually place each book into a plastic storage bag. Stand books in boxes instead of stacking. Place the boxes on shelves or tables to keep them off of the floor.

Jewelry

Like books, it is important to clean jewelry before placing it in self-storage. This helps preserve the surfaces during rises in humidity. Place each piece of jewelry in a separate box to keep necklaces and bracelets from tangling with each other. If you still have the original box the piece came in, use that, but if not, you can use a small cardboard box filled with cotton balls.

Glassware

China and glassware are best packed in small boxes. This protects each piece from the weight of other pieces. Wrap glassware in at least two layers of packing paper. Line boxes with crumpled packing paper before placing the glassware inside. Pack glass items tightly to reduce the chance of movement and cracking. Top off the box with more crumpled paper before sealing it with tape.
