Ultimate Self-Storage Decluttering Guide

Decluttering your home can be a daunting task, especially if you have tons of stuff packed away. Organizing your house takes a lot of time but in the end, it’s better to have a well-organized living space (and storage unit). At Central Coast Storage, we understand the importance of decluttering and want you to have a Marie Kondo storage experience, so we’ve compiled some tips!
Don’t Overwhelm Yourself
Taking things room-by-room will greatly decrease the amount of stress that decluttering instigates. It’s like those spring cleaning tips: don’t bite off more than you can chew. Start with the most cluttered areas in the home, usually the garage or attic, and work your way to bedrooms and the kitchen. Make sure to fully finish one room before moving onto the next, and don’t forget to label it.
Sort Your Stuff
If you’re like most people, chances are you have a ton of useless stuff lying around the house or already in your storage unit. It’s time to properly sort these items into four categories: keep, throw away, store, and donate. What you keep stays in the house, and what you store comes to us. Everything else can be thrown away or donated to local organizations. We recommend going through each room in the house and doing this, perhaps doing a different room each day. You’ll be surprised how much you actually get rid of!
Store Seasonal/Rarely Used Items
If something isn’t being used all of the time, put it in a self-storage unit until it’s needed again. Holiday decor, out-of-season clothing, boats, and more can all be neatly tucked away and out-of-site. This will free up space in the garage, closets, and other around-the-house storage spots. Self-storage is a great option for homeowners or renters that simply don’t have enough space! If you want to store around the house, using large totes and bins that contain the same type of items is recommended.
Basically, these storage ideas for clutter will make your decluttering experience much more manageable. Start with one room at a time, decide what to keep, store and throw away, then make the whole thing easier by using a Central Coast Storage Unit. We take the hassle out of self-storage with our amazing guest amenities. Storage has never been easier!
